Abstract:With depiction of family history and attack on racial discrimination, Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead reveals the history of race relations and reshapes reality in the United States. Therefore, the novel Gilead realizes interaction between text and history, embodying New Historicism’s two basic concepts: “Textuality of history” and “Historicity of text”. On the one hand, Gilead completes the implicit writing on racial issue of America, suggesting the plight of blacks in history and reality. On the other hand, Gilead expresses Robinson’s aspirations for racial equality in America, which can actively participate in construction of history as a part of it.
