Faulkner’s stream-of-conscious ness novels are generally credited as the most complicated works of the Faulkner canon because of their original forms and profound themes. It is advisable to probe into the writer’s cultural heritage before making explorations of these works. Faulkner, for example, has many affinities with Bergson’s theory in his literary creation, such as their concepts of time, their feelings about the dynamic quality of the subjective personality, their recognition of the unequalled power of intuition in artistic creation, and their emphasis on the difficulty of communicating the flow of reality by means of symbols that are relatively static. Bergsonism therefore proves a key to understanding the puzzling aspects of Faulkner’s stream-of-consciousness novels. |
