Abstract:The concept of ESP first appeared in the book The Linguistic Sciences and Language Teaching in 1964, co?authored by Halliday, McIntosh and Strevens. Since then, people began to be aware of the fact that ESP is a natural product of social development. Its theoretical foundation has, at least, three aspects. The teaching and working experiences of the writer are related to some extent to distinguish the differences between ESP and EGP. The writer is firmly convinced that ESP is of special interest to anyone concerned with working out appropriate solutions for teaching and learning English. And he cherishes the belief that ESP, if properly combined with a certain specialized subject or professional knowledge, can cultivate a great number of “composite talents”.
