Abstract:According to relevance theory, linguistic communication is intrinsically an indicative ?inferential process. The speaker provides the most relevant information, and the listener infers from the information by linguistic context, chooses the most relevant assumption, gets the optimal relevance, correctly understands the speaker’s intention and achieves the success of communication. Relevance theory also regards translation as an indicative?inferential process of different cultures and languages. In the practice of translation, the translator acts as the successful communicative bridge between the original author and the readers of the translation. Therefore, the translator should take the readers’ cognitive ability into consideration and use the domestication or alienation strategies in different situations in order to help readers find the optimal relevance between the context of source text and that of target text to gain the best communication.
