Adaptation of novels to films is more than transplant of the novel’s content to the film and it is a re?creation which needs to take into account various aspects such as the original work, adapted work and the audience. The adapted work should be a mixture of loyalty, transcendence and betrayal of the original work. The film English Patient, through techniques of foregrounding, reduction, grafting, and transparency, achieves a complete transformation of the novel in terms of both form and content, making it one of the exemplars in film adaptation which has won both critical acclaim and good reception among moviegoers. The present paper is meant to explore the adaptation process, adaptation strategy as well as the useful lessons we can learn from the adaptation practice of the film
