he paper analyzes Conrad’s love and hate toward the empire in his first novel Almayer’s Folly from the perspectives of new historicist theory. Based on the text analysis, the paper reveals Conrad’s subversion to imperialistic consciousness, his containment by it and the following negotiation with it in order to demonstrate Conrad’s inseparable imperialistic complex.
