Abstract:Conceptual metaphor theory (CMT) motivates a lot of researches and has its significance in cognitive linguistics. It receives all kinds of challenges and impugnation in that it pays more attention to synchronic research of language and ignores the diachronic one. The book Metaphor, Etymology, and Culture: A Corpus?based Exploration and Methodological Reflection employs the methods of Comparative Etymology and Comparative Cross Motivation to explore lexicalized emotion metaphors (LEMS) in English and Chinese, based on the parallel lexical metaphor database. It explains the cultural motivations for conceptual metaphors and metaphorical lexes. This book proves a supplement and amendment to CMT as well as a new approach to the research of LEMS. The significance will be illustrated in other research fields such as language teaching, translation and cultural studies.
