In light of modern linguistic theories, this paper documents the metaphorical nature of scientific discourses by examining the relationship between language and reality, the social and cross-disciplinary characters of modern science, and then probes the ideational, interpersonal and textual functions of lexical and grammatical metaphors in scientific discourses, aiming to do justice to the roles of metaphors in scientific enterprise and discourses.
