An investigation we conducted recently shows that the current situation of argumentative writing of the first-year non-English majors is far from satisfactory.Apart from mistakes of spelling,grammar,collocation and style,there are errors of generic structures.This paper attempts to analyze these errors and offer some suggestions on how to improve the teaching of argumentative writing by applying the Generic Structure Potential Theory put forward by systemic functional linguists.
