Abstract:In the course of translation between English and Chinese,we see noticeable differences between the two languages in the sentence constituent that conveys the core information of a statement. In the case of Chinese grammar, major constituents are used to indicate the core information of a statement while,in the case of English grammar, minor constituents are chosen to identify the core information. That is,there is a consistency between the semantic focus and the grammatical focus in Chinese,as is contrasted by an inconsistency between the semantic focus and the grammatical focus in English. Therefore, the writer comes up with a translation approach called "Transference of Syntactic Focus",which says that it is necessary to interchange the grammatical roles of the major and minor constituents, thus transferring the syntactic focus of the source language to ensure faithfulness and expressiveness of the target language.
