Abstract:An empirical study on the relationship between Non-English majors' use of metacognitive strategies and oral English proficiency has been conducted.Quantitative method is adopted in the study.Results of the study reveal that the use of metacognitive strategies in oral English among Chinese college Non-English majors is not very satisfactory.Next, among the five categories of metacognitive strategies, what students use comparatively the most is the category of goals and plans while the category of self-monitoring rates is rarely used.The usa of the categories of self-monitoring, self-managing, selective attention as well as plans and goals exhibits certain explanatory power in the differences of the students' oral English results.The study also shows some positive relationship between the frequency of overall metacognitive strategy use and the results of oral English proficiency.
