Abstract:In a literary work, some so-called secondary characters are often neglected by the reader.Actually, they serve as contrast, rendering the atmosphere in the side, linking up and impeling the plot development and playing a vital role on various aspects. This paper analyzes the functions of the two little figures “Ernst Wallau” and “The shepherd Ernst” in the novel The Seventh Cross. With these two little characters, the author Anne Seghers emphasized humanity and expressed her own political, historical hope. And these two characters together with other characters reflected the reality of the Third Reich from different angles. The paper points out that these two figures may be small but they are indispensable, they are an integral part of the novel.
