Abstract:The learners' cognitive styles are closely related to their learning achievement.Based on Riding's theory of cognitive styles, this research conducted questionnaires among 108 art majors to investigate their cognitive style preferences, and then examined their English proficiency with a test on English. Finally,a descriptive statistical analysis was used to analyze the correlations between the preferences for cognitive styles and the English achievements of the art students. Results are achieved as following:there's a negative correlation between sequential cognitive styles and reading comprehension achievement;visual cognitive style has high positive correlations with English achievement, vocabulary achievement, reading comprehension and writing achievement;field dependent cognitive style has a high correlation with writing achievement;and field independent is closely correlated with English achievement, listening comprehension and reading comprehension achievements.
