Based on Georg Lukacs's reification theory, this paper aims at exploring the phenomena of reification in Henry James's mid-term work The Bostonians. The study finds that the rapid development of capitalism after the Civil War produced much negative influence on the American people's spiritual life and that the natural and traditional human relationships like kinship and friendship inevitably have been objectified. Our work will contribute to understanding the postbellum social spiritual outlook in America, which is also a complement to Henry James studies at home.
