Both Eugene A.Nida and Mildred L.Larson have suggested their information transmission modes respectively; Nida emphasizes the surface structure while Larson focuses on the deep structure. It might be worthwhile to combine the merits of the two modes with an aim to acquiring the semantic and stylistic equivalence between the SL and the TL.Translators, transmitters of equivalent semantic and stylistic information, are often confronted with the difficult choice between the two translation strategies,i.e.domestication and foreignization. This thesis tries to make a comparison at linguistic and cultural level, between the two English versions of Hong Lou Meng translated by Yang Xianyi and David Hawkes respectively. It is advisably concluded that domestication and foreignization are not in absolute contradiction, but are supplementary to each other. They have their respective features and values in guaranteeing semantic and stylistic equivalence.
