The present paper deals with the origin, three theoretical foundations and the development of ESP at home and abroad;pinpoints the disparities between ESP and EGP, then indicates the important role played by ESP in the social development and economical construction of our country.It is believed, with the increasing social needs as its driving force, ESP will have a much more promising prospect in China.
