A market survey on language service in 2016 showed that technical communication had become the third most needed service in China.Up to 80% of technical communicators are self-taught,for there are few TC programs at Chinese universities.TC education is in its initial stage in China in contrast to a comprehensive TC education system from BA to PhD degree programs in the USA.However,albeit the shortage in TC programs in Chinese universities,there are other programs like ESP that bear the features of TC.This paper analyzes the course design and practice of one such course,i.e.Practical English Writing with Tongji University to demonstrate that TC education may have a firm foundation in China.
