As an important concept in stylistics,foregrounding highlights some words by means of their deviation from normal expressions so as to draw the target readers to the author's intention.The present paper,based on Halliday's “motivated prominence”,is intended to study James Joyce's text A Little Cloud from syntactic and Leech's semantic perspectives to discuss the functional significance of foregrounding in deepening the theme and creating an aesthetic effect.
