Abstract:The rapid endangerment and death of many languages across the world is a global problem. It is also a serious challenge to cultural diversity. The present paper indicates that language death is not a new linguistic phenomenon, but its systematic study is a relatively new field of sociolinguistics. The paper provides information about existing world languages given by Ethnologue. It indicates that languages in the process of dying are endangered languages, emphasizing that the danger is not the loss of a language per se but the loss of a culture. As a result, the knowledge that is specific to the culture may be lost.
