Nowadays,there are about 200 institutions of higher education with "Shifan" in their official names in China.However,scholars hold different views as to how to render "Shifan" in the names of universities and colleges.Altogether,ten English versions for "Shifan" have been found after the collection of 170 official English names of these Chinese universities and colleges.The paper is intended to discuss the appropriateness of the employment of "normal" from several aspects,including historical backgrounds,ideology,social influence,and establishment by social convention.In the end,it is advocated that the translated version of "Shifan" in the names of colleges and universities in Greater China Region be standardized.
