Abstract:Charles Harpur is generally acknowledged as the first bard in Australian poetry history, however, the research of his poems from narrative perspective remains blank. The rise of narrative studies provides a proper perspective and theoretical framework in space image, space narrative, and poetic rhythm to deal with his poems from scenes, space narration and rhythm,in an attempt to highlight the sublimity in his poetry. The overlapping and repetition of space images greatly boost poetic effect. The overlapping space images modify the mode of subject consciousness, which is closely related to the destiny of the character and narrative process. As a narrative element, space images not only lays the narrative tone, but affects the narrative process.Besides, the narrative process is largely dependent on the prosodic rhythm and meters. The result shows that the space interpretation of Harpurs's poems is a new worthy attempt which needs further study in the future.
