Abstract:Japanese is characterized by onomatopoeic words which play a very important role in Japanese comics series.Take Yugami Kun Has No Friends as an example,it has abundance of illustrations. This paper has proposed four translation strategies of Japanese onomatopoeic words into Chinese by following the two fundamental translation principles of functional equivalence and domestication. The first is variation translation strategy, which emphasizes the localization of the source text. The second is gloss translation strategy, which retains the cultural colors of the source text. The third is substitution translation strategy, featuring the four-character idioms or proverbs in Chinese. The fourth strategy turns out to be back-tracing translation, intending to back-trace the source terms. The authors hold that more attention should be paid to the translation of onomatopoeic words in Japanese comics. It is advisable that the four translation strategies mentioned above should be flexibly employed to deepen the localization of comics translation, and meanwhile to maintain the charm of original contents as much as possible.
