Abstract:The Help,American writer Kathryn Stockett’s debut novel,exposes the terrible living condition of black people in the southern part of the United States under the white hegemony,and vividly presents the racial issues in Mississippi area during the 1960s.This article makes an analysis of The Help from a critical discourse analysis perspective.By means of classification,transformation and mood system,the thesis analyzes various words used by the white and the black,passive voice,different mood structures of the maids and the white employers,revealing the passive,low social status of black people and their loss of voice,as well as the asymmetrical power relation between the white and the black.It is found out that Kathryn Stockett subtly depicts black people’s loss of voice by employing various linguistic strategies.
