Abstract:Howard Goldblatt,the English translator of the Chinese contemporary writer Mo Yan,plays an indispensible role in introducing Mo Yan's works to the Western readers and his winning Nobel Prize in Literature in 2012.The paper analyzes Howard Goldblatt's translation of Death and Life Are Wearing Me Out.Translation is a sort of creative treason in that it places the original in a totally new environment.And creativity in translation gives the original a brand-new visage,enabling it to enjoy a brand-new literature interchange with a wider range of readers and be spread in the new country.Individualized translation is one form of creative treason.By studying on individualized translation in Death and Life Are Wearing Me Out,including betrays and omission of the original,the paper concludes that the English version is not contrary to the traditional"faithfulness" principle.Instead,it is a deep loyalty and a natural choice under the situation of cultural imbalance between China and the western countries.
