Abstract:This empirical research selects 227 majors as subjects, and attempts to explore their pragmatic competence of routines(PCR) with gender and English proficiency(EP) as variables. It is discovered that:1) all subjects' PCR is at a low level, and a significant difference exists between recognition and expression competence and utterance responding and initiating competence;2) female subjects present better PCR than the males on the whole, and there is a statistical significance between both groups;gender produces a minimal impact on high EP group, while a great impact on medium EP group and little influence on the low EP group;3) there exist a big difference in male and female learners' concrete pragmatic performances of routines. They possess high pragmatic competence in such speech acts as praising and warning, and low competence in inviting, requesting acts, etc. This paper analyzes the statistics and the underlying reasons, emphasizing pragmatic competence of routines in EGP and ESP teaching.
