Abstract:Trauma Theory is the core of Sigmund Freud's early theoretical research, and trauma designates people's unusual experiences of a sudden or catastrophic event. The theory has been widely applied to literature criticism since the late 20th century. As one of the representative works of Kazuo Ishiguro,The Remains of the Day describes a British butler Stevens' recall and reflection on his past trauma experience. The literary text displays three stages, namely the embodiment, continuation and recovery of the trauma, and narrates Stevens' summary of his past experiences and gradual establishment of connections with the outside world, thus providing enlightenment into the general trauma recovery.
