Abstract:The missionary university and its architecture have a distinct historical and cultural imprint. The American Baptist Missionary Union and the South Baptist Convention founded University of Shanghai in 1906 in the northeastern part of Shanghai, and it grew into a top-ranking university in China in the 1930s.Yates Hall is the first and most important building at University of Shanghai, witnessing the history for more than 100 years.Combing its historical background of the construction, researching and restoring its construction process, and interpreting it from a cultural perspective can not only deepen the research on the history of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, but also provide clues and basis for the protection of historical buildings and help to understand the university campus, the educational, cultural, and social significance of architectures in different times and spaces.
