Abstract:Should tertiary English teaching be English for General Purposes (EGP) oriented or English for Science & Technology (EST) oriented? Through two surveys conducted in 1991 and 2019 among two generations of scientists in University of Chinese Academy of Sciences,we find that despite the changed perceptions of EST,similar opinions exist as to the role language teachers play in the EST instruction. We believe that language teachers should bear chief responsibility for it rather than subject teachers;EST should focus on discipline-specific language rather than common cores, and therefore EDST (English for Disciplinary Science & Technology) is a more urgent;EDST should be provided among undergraduates rather than postponed to postgraduates. The reason that students' academic writing suffers from poor logic is that they lack the training of writing research articles for publication rather than their low English proficiency.
