This paper reports an interview with Academician Gu Min,a world-leading expert on optics.Academician Gu first shared his English learning experiences in China and abroad,emphasizing the importance of goal orientation and intensive engagement for English learning.Then he elaborated on his academic writing and publishing history in Australia,admitting more tolerance of non-native English writers' language use by the international academia.Next,he analyzed the graduates' problems in English writing and oral presentation,providing suggestions for English teaching in University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST).Academician Gu concluded the interview with high expectations for teachers and students at USST.
