Abstract:This study attempts at the differences in literature review writing between MA students and experts. The collected data include 30 samples of literature review excerpted from research papers written by first-year graduate students majoring in management and 30 samples of literature review extracted from articles on international journals. Results show that:1) there are not sufficient M3 "creating a research niche" and M4 "occupying the research niche" in students' literature review writings; 2) students do not use as many strategies of moves as expert writers do; 3) students present less scientific thinking in literature review writing than expert writers do; 4) the generic structures of literature review and scientific thinking are closely connected in literature review writing. The present study may offer valuable suggestions for Chinese graduate students in academic writing.
