Abstract:A detailed depiction of space greatly contributes to the success of Nice Work by David Lodge.By employing three-category frames, namely, spatial continuum, inconsistent frames and inaccessible frames, Lodge completed the global construct of Rummidge, a fictional city as the setting of his campus novels, endowing the inconsistent frames with distinctive class and gender attributes.Intertextuality with classic industrial novels led to intertextual communication between inaccessible frames possible. The three categories of frames constitute the space of story in the novel which unfolds a dramatic representation of the cultural conflicts between English industrial capitalism and traditional humanism.
