Abstract:Based on the self-built Corpus of Academic Spoken English, this paper studies the word stress displacement of Chinese science and engineering majors, and analyzes the main word stress displacement, its distribution, the standard frequency of stress displacement among students of different grades and genders and whether there are significant differences. Results show that word stress displacement occurs mainly in multisyllabic words, and the highest frequency of word stress is displaced to the second syllable. The comparative analysis reveals that the standard frequency of stress displacement is more among first-year and female students than second-year and male students, yet there are no statistically significant differences among students of different grades and genders. Accordingly, suggestions for teaching and learning are made.
