Abstract:Scholars have different views on temporal and spatial features in English and Chinese, which seems to result from different research perspectives, but the profound analysis reveals that it is due to the fact that English and Chinese temporal and spatial traits are a continuum. Specifically, the temporal features of English are highlighted at the lexical level, and gradually strengthened at the level of phrase, sentence and discourse. At the level of multi-semantic English sentence and discourse, spatial traits are mainly reflected. In contrast, the spatial traits of Chinese are highlighted at the lexical level, and gradually salient at the level of phrase, sentence and discourse. At the level of Chinese multi-semantic sentence and discourse, temporal traits are prominent. To clarify the dialectical relationship between the temporal and spatial continuum is conducive to predicting the difficulties encountered by EFL learners, discovering the key and difficult points in English learning, choosing appropriate teaching methods, and ultimately improving the effectiveness of L2 acquisition.
