Abstract:Characterized by their wide use of antithesis, Chinese classic chapter titles, which play a vital role in Chinese novels written in the Ming and the Qing Dynasties, are endowed with great aesthetic and research value. This paper researches the chapter titles of the Four Great Classic Chinese Novels with the tool of the Bilingual Parallel Corpora of the Four Great Chinese Classic novels. It studies English translations of chapter titles in the four novels and focuses on features and C-E translation strategies of chapter titles. A comparative study discovers that syntactically, translation methods like amplification, replacement, conversion, and creative adaptation are employed to the translate chapter titles, whereas rhetorically, translation methods vary greatly. The research discusses the underlying causes of translation strategies in order to provide some tips for future researchers.
