Abstract:The American Baptist Missionary Union and the Southern Baptist Convention carefully selected the site of University of Shanghai, and the process was full of difficulties and twists. The plan to establish a university in China was made in 1900, but it was not determined to build the university in Shanghai until 1902. In 1905, the American Baptist Missionary Union and the Southern Baptist Convention formally reached an agreement on joint education. After site visiting, the board of trustees overcame financial constraints and finally selected a plot of land along the Huangpu River as the campus site which extended about 6 miles in downtown Shanghai and 1 mile in the Piont. Because of the low-lying terrain, the building foundation needs to be raised, resulting in increased construction costs. The university is far away from the city, the traffic is inconvenient, resulting in a smaller impact of radiation. Though the selected site is cheap and far from the hustle and bustle of the city, it is close to the Huangpu River which has spiritual inspiration value for students because they can have a clear view of the ships coming and going and can always feel that they live in a “big world”.
