Abstract:Based on the Theory of Relevance, this paper analyzes the subtitle translation of Sense and Sensibility (produced and released in 1995), a film adapted from the namesake novel by Jane Austen. The Theory of Relevance helps to explain acceptability of the Chinese translation of the English subtitling in the context of target Chinese culture. Moreover, guided by the principle of Optimal Relevance, the authors put forward three basic strategies for English subtitle translation: domestication, explicitation, and simplification, which great implications for film subtitle translation.
