As the leader of Imagism and one of the most influential poets in the 20th century, Ezra Pound had made great contributions to the cultural exchanges between China and the West. He admired Confucianism and translated many Confucian classics during his detention after World War II, including Shijing. Although there were many English translations of Shijing before the publication of Pound’s translation, it was very different, and even more different from the original work. It can even be regarded as a brand-new English poem created by Pound by absorbing the characteristics of ancient Chinese poetry. Analysis of Pound’s historical background and his translation with his poetic identity and ideological tendency shows that the reasons for transformation of Shijing in Pound’s translation are: transforming Western poetry, exploring Eastern civilization and embodying his own spirit and ideal.
