Abstract:The research on English teachers’ professional development in Chinese colleges and universities is progressing step by step under the influence of international frontier research, and presents Chinese characteristics. This paper describes the research on the professional development of English teachers in Chinese colleges and universities with comments. It outlines the path of research in six aspects: expansion of knowledge structure, integration of information technology, role of scientific research consciousness, power of influencing factors, enrichment of development, and rise of the empirical research. It shows the landmark achievements, but also points out the existing problems. In the future, we need to make new breakthroughs by strengthening empirical research, broadening theoretical channels, improving weak fields and identifying research hotspots. In the 21st century, such kind of research should advance forward and accomplish more achievements.
