Abstract:Presence and mass are two important concepts proposed by Martin and other scholars based on Maton’s Legitimation Code Theory. The two terms are counterparts of Maton’s concepts of semantic gravity and semantic density. Presence and mass are key parameters of knowledge construction and are ideationally realized by iconicity and technicality respectively which are closely related to the frequencies of grammatical metaphors and technical terms.
