Depicting the plights of the underprivileged in India, the 2008 Booker Prize-winning novel The White Tiger explores spatial injustice in the course of urbanization. Based on Henri Lefebvre and David Harvey’s theories of spatial production and spatial justice, this article analyzes the novel’s spatial writing in three dimensions. It juxtaposes rural and urban landscapes to contrast utopianization of the countryside in history and marginalization of rural areas in reality; it focuses on “uneven geographies” and “spatial segregations” during the processes of spatial production and reconfiguration, and reveals the logic and essence of spatial exploitation of the poor through appropriation of private spaces, division of public spaces, and encroachment on spatial resources; it displays the global and capital configuration, and unmasks the nature of resource monopoly and cultural hegemony practiced by capitalist nations. In short, Aravind’s spatial writing not only addresses some social issues brought about by the global capital expansion, but also conveys a profound sympathy for underprivileged people and appeals for spatial justice.
